The English Language Programs (ELP) at University of Guelph offer English language learners an opportunity to develop their language ability, academic skills and overall understanding of Canadian culture.

Integrated Admission Pathway

Begin your University of Guelph degree while you study English. For students interested in a Bachelor of Commerce (Undeclared), Bachelor of Arts (All Majors including those with coop option), or Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Science or Environmental Geomatics-coop option), the Integrated Admission Pathway gives you the option to begin your credit courses while you complete your English Language studies.

Complete five courses (5 x 0.5 credits) towards your degree and your English proficiency in just three semesters. Begin your full-time degree program in your fourth semester.

Admission Requirements

  • IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 56 or equivalent
  • Strong academic transcripts

Guaranteed Admission Pathway

The combination of the English Language Certificate Program (ELCP) and the Open Learning program provides a flexible option for guaranteed admission to Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts degrees at the University of Guelph. Only for students who have not studied at a post-secondary institution.

The following steps are required for the Guaranteed Admission Pathway:

  1. Complete the advanced level of the English Language Certificate Program
  2. Complete four undergraduate courses with a 70% cumulative average†
  3. Enter your degree program with four advanced credits toward your degree

English Language Certificate Program (ELCP)

The ELCP is an intensive 25-hour per week academic English program. Completion of the advanced level (levels 9 and 10) meets the English language proficiency requirements for admission to:

  • University of Guelph
  • University of Guelph-Humber

Graduate Preparation Diploma Program (GPP)

The GPP builds on the foundation of the ELCP and adds specific courses designed to prepare students for graduate study in Canada. All GPP students must complete ELCP levels 9 and 10 in order to be eligible for a 14-week semester of courses aimed at graduate preparation. The GPP has a minimum length of 28 weeks (8 months), depending on level placement within ELCP. GPP courses include:

  • Writing at the Graduate Level
  • Critical Analysis
  • Critical Listening and Speaking
  • IELTS Preparation

English Language Programs Tuition:

  • Integrated Admission Pathway: 12 months -$29,500 CAD
  • English Language Certificate Program:
    • 7 weeks – $2688 + 575 student fees
    • 14 weeks – $5150 + 760 student fees
  • Guaranteed Admission Pathway:
    • 7 weeks – $2688 + 575 student fees
    • 14 weeks – $5150 + 760 student fees
    • 4 online degree courses
  • Graduate Preparation Diploma Program: 8 months – $10,300
